The partnership with The Grey Matter Group (TGMG) has been successful for Slough Borough Council. With continuous constraints on budgets and higher rates of staff turnover that is typical of the care sector, having a high standard eLearning platform is now an important resource, rather than a ‘nice to have’ tool for the adult social care workforce. TGMG seek to ensure that the eLearning courses are up-to-date and relevant. Their pro-activeness around the Care Certificate in particular has proved very helpful for our provider services, and is reflected in the significant increase in course take up over the last 2 years.

As a social care provider we have used a variety of methods to ensure our staff have the knowledge and are competent to support the people with whom they work.
This had mixed results until we began to work with the Grey Matter Group in 2013 and introduced the online Common Induction Standards.
When introducing a new product and approach, it is always met with various levels of anxiety but we felt that by introducing an online version of the standards, our staff and managers would save at least 50% of the time they had originally spent trawling through workbooks and would be able to focus the time they did spend on ‘filling in the gaps’ rather than repeating information they clearly already knew.
The standards are easily accessible, the guidance is clearly written and resources invaluable. We don’t only use the standards for new staff; in some areas, the managers have introduced it as a performance management resource for the whole staff team.
We were able to arrange workshops around the country for our Locality Managers and Assistant Locality Managers, which were facilitated by Alex and Eddie. Their knowledge and enthusiasm, their attention to detail and Eddie’s wealth of social care experience makes the workshops come alive and managers are able to relate this to their day to day roles.
We are now in our fourth year with The Grey Matter Group and they have successfully assisted us in the smooth transition from the Common Induction Standards to the Care Certificate.
